Hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed Shadows From the Cemetery tape, CEMETERY FOG strike while the iron's hot with a brand-new 12" MLP, Towards the Gates. While the CEMETERY FOG on said cassette was a rumbling 'n' rough-hewn one, the Finnish duo have made a startling progression on Towards the Gates, refining that doomed-out Metal of Death into one that's more mature, majestic, and absolutely mournful. In many ways, the CEMETERY FOG of now bear more than a passing resemblance to the early '90s school of UK doom-death - crushing yet emotive, melodic yet sorrowful, deathly yet graceful - but with an eerie, mystical touch all their own. The band may still be young, but their confidence and ambition are wholly evident across the five tracks of Towards the Gates - and they're just getting started. Mikolaj is a real multi-talent in bass as well as guitar as well as vocals and "Darkside" Maciej's drumming is a well-calibrated 100th-of-seconds-clockwork. Not for nothing is Mgla considered as a standard for a lot of other blacker-than-black metal bands. I hope to see this band live once..... grote_smurf
