SERPENT SPAWN is a brand-new formation of old-school German veterans: drummer Markus Winterstein (Malaphar), guitarist Rob Wenglorz (ex-Blood, ex-Dawn), and vocalist/guitarist/bassist Martin Witchskinner (Blood). Given such an '90s-entrenched pedigree, it's no surprise that the power-trio's debut recording, the EP Crypt of Torment, is an authentic slice of ripping, straightforward DEATH METAL. Rich and robust is the recording, ably highlighting each member's muscular chops, as they create a maelstrom of demonic fury that seemingly comes from every direction but retains a memorability redolent of the genre's early days. Straightforward and no frills but never primitive nor undercooked, Crypt of Torment contains 15 quick-hitting minutes that are sure to entice diehards of early Deicide, Malevolent Creation, Incubus, and of course Germany's Blood: this is SERPENT SPAWN!

The previous albums didn’t convince as effectively, but everything fits together here. It has barbaric but clear production. The drums sound like they belong in a reboot of Conan. True menace is felt from the vocals. Imprecation sounds like a band that will do you harm. Probably the most convincing orthodox death metal record since the 90s. Metallurgical Fire

An outstanding Extreme doom death album, in the best tradition. The funerary atmosphere reminds of Evoken ('Centuries of ooze" bears striking similarities, for my delight). It is overall sharp, dark, hypnotic and unrelenting. One of those rare convincing new bands that hold proud the legacy of the biggest names. Bertrand Marchal

The first 30 seconds of "Revenge by Fire" convinced me to get the whole album! It is a face-melting blend of speed and black metal, reminiscent of Hellripper! KVAEN is a Swedish solo project much like Hellripper but many known guest musicians helped J. Björnfot in his endeavor. Altogether it is really a solid debut album, I loved the melodies and the pace changes in the second half too, ending with a "calm" instrumental one. Well-done!! sachavonkarl74
